The first Palace on Wheels journey began its inaugural run on 26 January 1982 and has been a popular way of touring Rajasthan ever since. Within a few years the Palace on Wheels was rated as one of the ten best luxurious train journeys in the world.
The 14 air conditioned coaches are named after former Rajput states matching the aesthetics and interiors of the royal past. Each saloon has a mini pantry to ensure availability of hot and cold beverages, and refreshments. The modern conveniences have been thoughtfully provided, sofas to sink into, strategically placed lights to read by, wonderfully appointed beds with comfortable furnishings, inbuilt wardrobes and huge glass windows to watch the countryside roll past.
The train has two lavish restrobars "Maharaja" and " Maharani" with a Rajasthani ambience serving palate tickling Continental, Chinese, India and Rajasthani cuisines. The restaurants offer seating arranged thoughtfully near the windows. Chefs in the attached pantry prepare Continental and Indian specialties, with an emphasis on the cuisine of Rajasthan.
The Palace on Wheels boasts of a well-stocked bar offering the choicest of sprits of Indian and international brands.

All international news channels are available in the bar. There are two comfortable restro bars where you can relax over your favourite drink, read a book or converse with fellow passengers.
The train serves excellent cuisine in the restro bar, Maharaja and Maharani; both are decorated with opulently draped curtains and exquisitely crafted lights. Here the trained chefs on board serve a wide choice of Indian, including authentic Rajasthani fare, Continental and Chinese cuisine that are a feast for the palate.
For the natural balance of the body, mind, happiness and natural radiance, an additional facility on board is also provided at the Royal spa. The seven days journey will take you to seven beautiful cities of Rajasthan, each proud of its heritage, be it the trail of the mighty tiger in Ranthambhore; be it the abode of innumerable beautiful birds chirping in a the tranquil Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur; be it the exquisite Taj Mahal the immortal symbol of love; be it romantic Udaipur, the city of lakes; be it the magnificent fort of Mehrangarh in Jodhpur; or be it the golden sand dunes of Jaisalmer; the sights, sounds and feelings are permanently etched on the travellers' heart and mind. RTDC has formally appointed M/s CCEL (Cube Construction Engineering Limited) in consortium with M/s ETSPL (Easy Toll Solutions Private Limited) as their authorised O&M operator for Operation & Maintenance (0&M) of the Palace on Wheels (POW) as per agreement dated 28th June 2023.
